Pavers · 6 min read · AE Building Design
A paver driveway is mostly what you cannot see. The pattern you choose is the smallest part of the decision; the base beneath it decides whether the installation is still flat in five years.
The base does the work
A driveway carrying vehicle loads needs excavation to an adequate depth, compacted crushed aggregate installed in controlled lifts rather than one thick layer, with each lift compacted properly. Sandy South Florida soils and a high water table change what is required compared with other regions.
If a bid is meaningfully cheaper than the others, the saving is almost always below grade — where you cannot inspect it and will not know for two seasons.
Edge restraint and joint sand
Pavers spread outward under load unless they are restrained at the perimeter. Proper edge restraint, spiked into the base rather than laid on top of it, is what stops a driveway opening up at the edges. Polymeric jointing sand locks the field together, resists washout in heavy rain, and discourages weeds and ants. Two small line items that decide long-term performance.
Drainage is not an upsell
South Florida rainfall arrives fast and heavy. Hardscape has to shed that water away from the house without pooling on the surface or undermining the base. Depending on the site that can mean grading alone, or channel drains, catch basins, French drains and tying roof downspouts into the scheme.
Permeable paver systems are worth considering where drainage or coverage restrictions apply — water passes through the surface into an engineered reservoir base instead of running off.
Choosing a material
- Travertine stays comparatively cool underfoot, which matters enormously on a pool deck in July.
- Porcelain pavers are dimensionally consistent and very low maintenance.
- Interlocking concrete offers the widest range of formats at the best price.
Whatever the material, look at a full-size sample area on site in daylight before committing. Florida sun washes color out dramatically — a warm mid-tone in a showroom can read almost white against a bright stucco elevation.
Pool decks have extra requirements
Slip resistance, heat performance and drainage all matter more around a pool. Coping details, bullnose edges and expansion detailing around the shell should be resolved before anything is set.
The advantage nobody mentions
Pavers are serviceable. A settled area can be lifted, the base corrected and the same pavers reinstated with no visible patch. Utility work beneath a paver driveway is similarly reversible. Poured concrete offers neither. We leave surplus pavers on site where there is room, so future repairs match rather than approximate.
Replacing concrete with pavers
We remove the existing slab, build a proper base, and install the new system — including any drainage corrections the original concrete was masking. That last part is often the real reason the old driveway failed.
